Why Richmond Patients Trust Centered for Chinese Medicine

  • Thorough diagnostic process — I don’t treat every patient the same way. Your treatment plan is built around your specific pattern, not a generic protocol.
  • Acupuncture + herbal medicine together — Most conditions respond best when both are working in concert. I’m trained in both and prescribe custom herbal formulas as part of your care.
  • Over a decade of clinical experience — Licensed since 2011, Board of Medicine credentialed, with thousands of patients treated across a wide range of conditions.
  • Highly rated — One of the top-reviewed acupuncture clinics in the Richmond area on Google and Facebook.
  • No-pressure first step — Your initial consultation is complimentary. I’ll be straightforward about whether I think Chinese medicine can help your specific situation.

Getting Started Is Straightforward

Step 1: A Free Conversation About Your Health

Book a complimentary consultation online or by phone. This is a real conversation — I’ll ask about your health history, listen to what’s been going on, and give you an honest assessment of whether Chinese medicine is a good fit for your situation. No cost, no obligation, no sales pitch.

Step 2: A Clear Plan Before You Start

If we decide to work together, I’ll map out a treatment plan that includes what services I recommend, how many sessions to expect, and what the investment looks like. You’ll know exactly what you’re signing up for before your first treatment.

Step 3: Track Progress and Adjust

From your first treatment onward, I’m monitoring how your body responds. I use symptom tracking and regular check-ins to make sure we’re moving in the right direction — and I adjust the plan when the clinical picture shifts.s.

What Sets My Chinese Medicine Practice Apart

Here’s what I’ve noticed after over a decade of practice in Richmond: most patients who walk through my door have already tried other things. They’ve seen specialists, taken medications, done physical therapy, changed their diet. Some have improved partially. Many haven’t.

The reason Chinese medicine often succeeds where other approaches stall is that it’s built on a different diagnostic framework. Instead of matching a symptom to a drug, I’m looking for the pattern — the underlying imbalance that connects your symptoms into a coherent picture. Two patients with the same Western diagnosis can have completely different Chinese medicine patterns, and they need completely different treatments.

That pattern-based approach is the foundation of everything I do at Centered. Every treatment — whether it’s acupuncture, herbal medicine, or a combination — is designed around your specific pattern, not a one-size-fits-all protocol.

And when Chinese medicine isn’t the right fit for someone, I say so. I’d rather refer you to the right provider than waste your time.

About Your Practitioner: Maegan N. Hodge, L.Ac.

My path to Chinese medicine wasn’t a straight line. I started as a psychology major at the University of Virginia, grew up skeptical of anything that couldn’t show me hard evidence, and came from a small town in southwest Virginia where most people had never heard of acupuncture. A series of fortunate events — including my own health struggles — led me to the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon, where I earned my Master of Science in Oriental Medicine and completed a year-long mentorship with Dr. Heiner Fruehauf, one of the foremost Chinese herbalists in the country.

I’ve been licensed and practicing in Virginia since 2011 and opened Centered in 2014. Over the past decade-plus, I’ve treated thousands of patients dealing with everything from chronic pain and neuropathy to hormonal imbalances, digestive disorders, anxiety, Lyme disease, and fertility challenges. The common thread in my practice is complex cases — patients whose conditions don’t fit neatly into one box, and who need a provider willing to dig into the full picture.

I went to Centered as a last resort after taking over the counter and prescription pain killers to manage my joint pain and struggling with insomnia. First off, Maegan is THOROUGH. From the intake form to the consultation, she went into my whole history and was connecting the dots in a way no western doctor has done before. And her level of care and professionalism blew me away! I’ve already been able to wean myself off of prescription painkillers after 3 weeks (17 days so far without it!) and I’ve been able to sleep ~7 hours every night. TCM is the real deal but what else should you expect from 2,000 years of evidence-based results! Thank you, Maegan, for making me a believer!

I came to Meagan very fit on the outside, but felt like I was falling apart on the inside. I have believed in holistic medicine my entire adult life, and Meagan has been kind, patient and is amazing at listening and treating not only the issues you are aware of, but even those you are not. I truly feel we are not on this Earth to feel sub par, but I have been striving for years to feel my optimal self. After only a few treatments, I am well on my way to feeling the best version of myself. Not only has she re-centered my inner self through acupuncture and herbs, she has improved the mobility and function of my hamstrings that have had nagging issues for well over two years. I am grateful for how in tune with the body Meagan is, and how she can translate everything I say into how she can help heal me. I highly recommend Meagan for both acute and chronic health issues.

My visit to Centered was amazing. I felt like I was floating and so relaxed for at least two days afterward. One of the most peaceful experiences I've had. Meagan took time with me to review what was going on in my body and helped relieve some of my chronic knee pain. I'm amazed. Give acupuncture a try. Totally worth it.

I have suffered from chronic migraines for many years. Meeting Maegan and her wonderful team has been a true blessing. I have taken medications, done many years of physical therapy, massages, had a tens nerve ablation, you name it. Acupuncture has drastically changed my life for the better. Maegan is extremely professional. Her knowledge shines through and her ability to assess and treat amazes me. Our first meeting I was extremely impressed that she will assess if she believes she can help you or not. She does not want to waste your time. I was very appreciative of that, and knew I was in good hands. If you have ever thought, maybe I should try it- JUST DO IT. And come see Maegan Hodge

I waited a month after treatment to give my review to assess if the treatment worked. I started attending RVA Acupuncture in December, I went for approximately 2 months. It was my first time going to an Acupuncturist. I must say I feel better than before I started even a few weeks after treatment ended. Vicky really cares about her patients, she has a good group of staff working with her. It is a bit pricey, however it is worth it for better health (the only reason I did not give 5 star was the price). I maybe go back towards the end of spring for another issue. Thanks.

Where do I even start with Meagan Hodge and Centered Acupuncture! From my very first visit, I encountered the most thorough, thoughtful, and holistic health history I’ve ever experienced. Maegan listened to everything I had to say and drew connections between symptoms in a way no doctor I’ve been to ever has. She encouraged me to listen to signs my body was saying, and not dismiss them like we are often made to do in Western medicine. Every appointment Maegan has been engaged, is never rushed, and I genuinely felt and know that she cared and was invested in my progress. I originally went in for a variety of issues, including gastric health, insomnia, chronic headaches, and anxiety. It’s important to understand going in that finding what works for you is a commitment and may involve trying a few herbs that don’t work until she finds the right combination. She will also work with you to figure out a process that works. Taking herbs mixed with water didn’t work for me, so I ended up putting the herbs in vegetarian capsules that I got on Amazon. It does take up a lot of time, but it worked much better for me! My insurance didn’t cover the treatment, but Maegan worked with me to develop a plan that could fit within my budget. While it was an investment and resulted in my husband and I pulling back expenses elsewhere, to me it was a small price to pay to solve the root of how horrible I felt every day. Maegan has several different payment options to work within your means, and is very clear about the fact that the goal is to get you in a place as quickly as possible where you don’t need to go consistently. Overall, I cannot recommend Maegan and Centered enough. We would all be so much better off if every health care professional had the openness, intelligence, empathy, and passion that Maegan does for her patients and I’m beyond grateful that I made the investment in myself and my health to work with her.
